The Mahabharata is in my opinion the greatest story ever told, without even a near second. But this is definitely not the best version out there. Unfortunately, there really isn't a perfect version; but the flaws with this particular work are the following:
Rajaji is a politician, not a writer, and was not capable of moulding the essential story into a readable whole. The first mistake he makes is that he follows the original Ganguli version by summarising the whole story before he even begins! And so, in the first chapters, we get the whole plot, spoilers and all, laid out before us.
He then moves into the story itself. Much of this he tells in a very bland style, merely telling us what happened instead of showing. In this way he races thorugh scene after scene, trying to fit the whole huge book into a fraction of the space.
Thirdly: he leaves out important, dramatic scenes. The entire story of Bhishma and Amba! The story of Arjuna being cursed to become a eunuch! He either leaves these out, or he speeds through them so we are left with just the bare bones, the skeleton of the story.
All in all, Rajaji in no way does justice to this grand book.
Two versions I recommend are: Kamala Subramaniam's. This is a condensation too, but written with lots of dramatisation, dialogue, etc so that you are drawn into the story. This was the fisrt version I read, and it really swept me away! However, the writing is unfortunately below par -- written as if for children, in short jerky sentences.
William Buck's version. This is the opposite of Subramaniam's. Beautiful writing, almost poetic; however, he does not present a cohesive story and he, too omits several important scenes and makes changes which are utterly incomprehensible.
